The Gift: A 100 Word Review
The Gift is an incredibly uncomfortable mystery-thriller that uses the mental health and bodily integrity of its main female character as a pawn for a squabble between two male characters. Both male characters are terrifying: Gordo who is disrespectful yet overly polite and Simon who is consistently manipulative. The film would have made a great commentary on different ways men can be abusive if it wasn’t for the way the narrative treated Robyn as irrational, if it treated her like a person at all. The ending left her with little agency and no respect. This film left me feeling sick.
